Dear Sir or Madam,

Country of origin labelling for seafood in hospitality settings – information standard and explanatory statement

Thank you for providing the Tasmanian Rock Lobster Council Ltd (TRLC) with an opportunity to comment on the Competition and Consumer (Australian Consumer Law—Country of
Origin Information for Seafood for Immediate Consumption) Information Standard 2025 and explanatory statement.

The TRLC is the peak body representing the interests of the Tasmanian rock lobster industry and the Tasmanian giant crab industry.

The TRLC is fully supportive of this law, noting that its implementation has no regulatory impact on our members as our industry focuses on providing product, either through direct sales to consumers or through sales to fish processors. Our members do not provide ready- to-eat seafood or seafood meals.

As potential beneficiaries of this legislation, we are hopeful that its implementation will encourage Australian consumers to proactively seek Australian seafood rather than continue to preference seafood originating overseas.

We applaud the simple A(ustralian), I(mported), M(ixed) model for its clarity and relative low implementation costs. We encourage all purveyors of seafood to provide more

granularity in their provenance labelling than is legislatively mandated. Provenance labelling to the state and / or regional level (e.g. Tasmanian rock lobster or King Island- sourced rock lobster) can only benefit Australia’s fishers and fisheries.

Please feel free to contact me for more information.

Yours Sincerely,
