The Australian Government is now operating in line with Caretaker Conventions, pending the outcome of the 2025 federal election.

Overview

The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is seeking feedback on the evaluation of software for pattern approval.

We propose publishing NMI P XXX: Software evaluation for pattern approval.

The current edition of NMI P 106: Procedures for the Approval and Certification of Patterns of Measuring Instruments only provides guidance on variations to an approval in relation to software version updates or changes.

In the interest of best-practice, NMI P XXX: Software evaluation for pattern approval has been developed with consideration of the principles in International Organisation of Legal Metrology Document 31 (OIML D 31). It provides guidance for establishing requirements for software-related functionalities in measuring instruments.

NMI’s proposed regulatory approach will support industry and community by:

  • updating Australia’s requirements with international requirements and best practice

  • requiring the evaluation of software for software-controlled measuring instruments

  • harmonising requirements and providing a level playing field for manufacturers, importers and suppliers of measuring instruments.
