Overview

We want your views on how we can establish an industry to decommission offshore oil and gas infrastructure in Australia.

Decommissioning is a normal part of every offshore oil and gas project. It involves removing or otherwise dealing with offshore infrastructure once the project is no longer operating.

Your feedback will help us develop a roadmap that outlines approaches to building an Australian decommissioning industry. The roadmap will cover:

  • offshore decommissioning in Commonwealth waters

  • what happens when that property comes onshore for processing and recycling.

Most offshore oil and gas projects in Australia will be decommissioned in the next 30 years, with some being decommissioned in the next decade. About $60 billion worth of offshore decommissioning activity is expected to occur in Australia over the next 30 to 50 years.

The roadmap will consider how we can capture the value of decommissioning activity to support new industries and local jobs. This includes:

  • the capabilities, skills, infrastructure and supply chains needed to support decommissioning industry demand

  • how to create jobs, reskill existing workers, manage waste and support a circular economy

  • working with other industries, such as offshore wind farm development

  • the role of the Australian Government in helping grow a decommissioning industry.

The issues paper below outlines many of the opportunities and challenges we face in building a decommissioning industry. We look forward to your views on how we can address these.

We will use your feedback to help develop the final roadmap and any related government policies or regulations.
