Overview
Our department supports Australian businesses to access the R&D Tax Incentive each year. It allows businesses to claim a tax offset for the research and development they undertake. We provide education and guidance to business to help them assess whether they are eligible for the program.
Our department is committed to two-way engagement and open dialogue with business. We want to ensure that we continue to offer up-to-date, clear and easy-to-understand guidance.
We have reviewed stakeholder feedback on our Software guidance. In response, we have drafted a refreshed Software Guide, entitled ‘Software development activities and the R&D Tax Incentive’.
We would like to understand from current R&DTI participants or businesses that might access the program in future:
- whether the refreshed Software Guide is easy to read and understand
- if there is any further guidance we can provide to business to help them assess whether they are eligible
- if and when businesses will use the refreshed Software Guide
We will use this feedback to further improve the refreshed Software Guide.
This consultation is focussed on the department’s commitment to produce helpful guidance. At this time, the department is not seeking feedback in relation to any potential legislative reform relating to the program.

What happens next
We will review the feedback received, and where appropriate incorporate this into the final version of the refreshed Software Guide, entitled “Software development activities and the R&D Tax Incentive”, which will be made available on business.gov.au.
