Overview
The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is seeking input on a proposed regulatory approach for Near Infrared (NIR) instruments used for trade purposes. NIR instruments are an innovative alternative to the traditional trade measuring instruments, and are used by the sugar industry for quality measurements.
Currently, NMI does not specify any trade measurement requirements for use of these instruments by the sugar industry. NMI has been working with the industry over many years to ensure measuring instruments used for trade comply with the National Measurement Act 1960.

Our consultation paper outlines the proposed regulatory approach:

Feedback will help us develop a regulatory framework that will cover the use of NIR instruments in the sugar industry for trade purposes. We will also develop a Regulation Impact Statement (RIS) as part of the Government’s firm commitment to regulation that delivers net benefits for businesses and the community.
Supporting the sugar industry through better regulation is expected to promote innovation and industry growth.
We encourage input from a variety of industry, government and community stakeholders to ensure we consider the widest possible range of needs and interests.
