Overview

On 1 April 2026, the National Measurement Guidelines 2016 and recognized-value standards of measurement are due to sunset. If left to sunset, these legislative instruments would no longer be in force and have no legal effect after the sunset date.

The purpose of the instruments is as follows:

  • National Measurement Guidelines 2016. These describe how to form Australian legal units of measurement for physical quantities from the Australian legal units of measurement and prefixes. These units of measurement and prefixes are prescribed by the National Measurement Regulations 1999.

  • Recognized-value standards of measurement. These legally define the magnitudes of certain physical quantities that are used to support legally traceable measurements under the National Measurement Act 1960.

The National Measurement Institute is reviewing these legislative instruments and welcomes submissions into this review.

We propose that some legislative instruments be remade and others be allowed to sunset if they are no longer needed.
