Overview
We’re seeking feedback on a proposed update to the Australian Radioactive Waste Management Framework.
We want to make sure the framework is clear, practical and informed by public perspectives.
The framework sets out the Australian government’s strategic direction for safely managing radioactive waste now and into the future.
About the framework
This framework is part of the Australian Government's commitment to protect people, places and the environment over the long term.
Australia has generated radioactive waste for over 100 years through nuclear medicine, research, industry and national security activities. While these activities bring benefits, we have a responsibility to manage the waste safely.
Currently, Australia's radioactive waste is stored in more than 100 temporary locations. The framework outlines the government's approach to safely managing this waste through interim storage and the development of permanent disposal solutions.
How we’re consulting
This public consultation invites feedback from everyone.
We're also running targeted consultation for some First Nations, industry, local government and community representative organisations. This will help us understand different perspectives and needs.
What happens with your feedback
We'll carefully review all feedback and publish a summary of themes and outcomes when we release the final framework.

Important: This consultation is not about choosing a location for a national radioactive waste disposal facility.
What’s changed
We have updated the framework to reflect significant changes in Australia’s radioactive waste landscape since the last edition, published in 2018. This includes:
the establishment of the Australian Radioactive Waste Agency (ARWA)
the AUKUS program
the Australian Government's decision not to move forward with the previously shortlisted sites for a national radioactive waste facility
new private sector radioactive waste management services in Australia.
The new framework clarifies the roles and responsibilities of:
government agencies
states and territories
regulators
waste holders.
It also outlines the legal and regulatory requirements needed to manage radioactive waste safely and securely.
The framework recognises that the long-term management of radioactive waste relies on both technical safety and meaningful engagement built on transparency, trust and respect for communities' social, cultural and economic wellbeing.
