The Australian Government is now operating in line with Caretaker Conventions, pending the outcome of the 2025 federal election.

Overview

The Australian Government has identified green metals as a priority industry for a Future Made in Australia, specifically production of low emissions iron, steel, alumina and aluminium.

We want to understand what the barriers are to decarbonising the production of green metals. We also want to know what would encourage new investment in these sectors.

Your response will help guide policy development to support an Australian green metals industry and contribute to a Future Made in Australia.

Insights from the consultation will also inform the Australian Government’s Net Zero Plan, including the Industrial Sector Plan. This plan will consider the opportunities and barriers to decarbonising metals production.

We are seeking informed views, data and analysis from organisations and communities, including:

  • industry

  • think tanks

  • research organisations

  • unions

  • state and local governments.
