I think the current draft well captures the critical research efforts required. A critical emphasis needs to be put on enhancing the public (academia, research-focused government organisations) / private applied research efforts towards addressing these national priorities. This is key to ensure that our excellent public research feeds into more efficient, innovative, resilient, and productive business.

No comment on that question.

Here are three suggestions that I would add where relevant to the existing priorities (they do address overarching priorities already defined, such as the development of a net zero emission society, and the need to prepare for and mitigate climate change).
o Our dependence on weather information is only going to increase as weather becomes the main resource to generate electricity using solar farms, wind farms, and any emerging technology in that space. Research, innovation, and use of emerging technologies to provide better weather information (real-time, short-term forecasts, long-term forecasts, and climate projections) to energy management bodies should be a priority in that respect and is a critical step towards building trust towards a net zero emission society.
o We are totally dependent on Asian countries for the provision of satellite coverage of our nation and surroundings. There is also a significant shift towards private satellite companies building constellations and selling their products to meteorological services around the world to improve weather forecasts. Building national sovereignty seems like a critical research priority, which can be managed by the Australian Space Agency if mandated by the national priorities.
o The availability and type of jobs available to people is poised to completely change in the next 20 years (maybe less) due to the automation of jobs associated with Artificial Intelligence. Any research towards preparing society for that major change should be given priority.

* New policy proposals to enhance weather observations networks tailored to provide required information for industries such as energy and resources, agriculture, emergency services, insurance etc ...
* Specific funding sources to enhance collaborations between public and private sectors around critical research priorities requiring such collaborations.
* Funding for satellite mission studies to build satellite sovereignty and contribute to international satellite effort.

All of the above.
