What are Australia's greatest challenges that science could help to address? What opportunities should we seize? What strengths should we maintain and/or build?
What are Australia’s greatest:
a. challenges that science could help to address?
- timely responses to major climatic events
- alternative models of healthcare to deal with increased demand
- on shore capability in advanced manufacturing
- reliable energy sources that are sustainable
- Waste management
b. opportunities we should seize?
- Hydrogen energy sources
- Space and commercial opportunities
- Population health expertise as an export
- solar & wind energy (still need to figure out how to dispose of the solar panels)
c. strengths we should maintain or build?
- medical research
- surgical advancements
- space industry development
- Defence Industry development
- Advanced Agriculture Techniques (sustainable)
Does Australia have the capability and capacity needed to address these challenges, opportunities and strengths? If not, how could we build this?
2. Does Australia have the capability and capacity needed to address these challenges, opportunities and
strengths?
- Has the capability but not the capacity as population size does not make it commercially viable
to roll out onshore
- Alliances/partnerships with other countries very important
- Need to make Australia attractive to skilled migrants to address local shortfall of the best &
brightest
- Need to engage and incentivise industry in research and commercialisation
- Stronger and less tedious processes in linking industries with Universities
