At present the insight provided through this 2019 Acreage release does not inform us sufficiently as to the potential use of these areas, and as such we can only assume the highest level of impact may occur on the seafood industry.
The seafood industry would appreciate this process of acreage release being more transparent, in that when the oil and gas industry seek the opening of areas through the acreage release that the inclusion of a number of check-boxes to highlight in the first case what activity is proposed in the identification of an area.
When we consider the information provided at: https://nopims.dmp.wa.gov.au/Nopims/GISMap/Map and including the overlay of 2D and 3D survey activity over the areas proposed in the 2019 acreage release, these areas should be extremely well understood and we seek more information on what activities are proposed before we can provide sufficient comment on the potential impact of activities on our fisheries operations and the marine ecosystem.
We expect our associations and members to be consulted early in the ongoing developments of the release of these areas, ensuring that we are engaged as relevant persons upfront in a collaborative and meaningful way.
We are well aware of current activities in this area and the consultation fatigue of industry, which must be fully considered in further release of areas in the Otway Basin.
