Issue 5: Understanding community concerns for safety and the environment

6. What are the most important standards and regulations to have in place to ensure a safe hydrogen industry and address the community expectations?

What are the most important standards and regulations to have in place to ensure a safe hydrogen industry and address the community expectations?
The number of possible safety aspects and standards is quite broad. So the question should not just be which standards are most important but what is the structure of the frameworks that should be provided.

Regulations and standards need to be coordinated to form an effective and collective framework. It should be recognised that standards can provide a technical framework, but regulations are needed to provide both an enabling and enforcing framework.

The standards and regulatory frameworks will need to be enhanced for many aspects ranging from technical matters, approvals for relevant equipment, through to worker comeptencies and licensing. These aspects should also be considerd in a global environment and not just local Australian frameworks or requirements.

Further detail and examples of these issues are provided in the attached paper.

7. As an individual, how would you like to be engaged on hydrogen projects? Which aspects would you like to be kept informed of? Which aspects would you like to be consulted on? Are there any types of issues or challenges that you, or affected communities, would want to be a part of formulating solutions and recommendations?

As an individual I have more than 30 years’ experience in the development of national and international standards, regulations and codes of practice related to safety when handling flammable gases.
I would like to be engaged in these aspects going forward as a means to offer my experience and also to support ongoing develop of suitable frameworks that assist both the community and industry.
