Issue 5: Understanding community concerns for safety and the environment

7. As an individual, how would you like to be engaged on hydrogen projects? Which aspects would you like to be kept informed of? Which aspects would you like to be consulted on? Are there any types of issues or challenges that you, or affected communities, would want to be a part of formulating solutions and recommendations?

Happy to act as a volunteer in any domestic trials.
Very interested in information on CCS including chemical reforming of CO2 into products such as

Issue 6: Hydrogen in the gas network

4. What roles should government and industry play in addressing any consumer concerns and building social acceptance?

What roles should government and industry play in addressing any consumer concerns and building social acceptance?
Governments should take an early pro-active role in addressing actual and potential community concerns. Industry would be seen as having too much of a vested interest.
The Commonwealth-Victorian pilot project with Kawasaki raises the possibility of blending some of the hydrogen from the Latrobe Valley with the Victorian gas supply to reduce greenhouse emissions.
The implications of doing this should be discussed openly now and there should be a trial in Victoria and other jurisdictions of the impact of blended gas on appliances already installed in premises of various age profiles.
Volunteers could be called for to take part in such a trial even now, using bottled gas containing a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen in various trial ratios.
The volunteers would need some legal safeguards but their experiences, if successful,
would provide a credible assurance that the addition of say 10% hydrogen would operate safely and successfully without the need to replace existing stove, heaters, hot-water services, barbecues, etc.

5. How could the actions included in Table 2 be improved? Are there other actions that should be added?

See answer to question 4.
An early trial using gas bottles connected to the volunteer consumer's domestic supply should be feasible and could be put in place much sooner than it would take to map out and obtain local community support for blended gas in areas deemed suitable.
This would help to allay community concerns about safety and the need to replace or modify existing appliances.
