Overview

The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is seeking feedback on the Australian pattern approval requirements for evidential breath analysers (EBAs).

NMI proposes to adopt and modify the latest version of OIML R 126 Evidential breath analysers.

EBAs are measuring instruments intended for the measurement of alcohol concentration in exhaled human breath. EBAs are principally used for compliance with road and maritime safety laws and other alcohol laws.

The OIML Recommendation for instruments of this type (OIML R 126) was last revised and updated in 2021. NMI’s proposed approach will support industry and the community by:

  • updating Australia’s requirements with international requirements and best practice

  • improving access to the latest measurement technology and providing confidence in the performance of EBAs into the future

  • aligning requirements with our trading partners and providing a level playing field for manufacturers and suppliers of EBAs.
