Overview

We are seeking feedback to help design the Green Aluminium Production Credit (GAPC), a key initiative under the Future Made in Australia plan.

The $2 billion GAPC will:

  • help reduce carbon emissions and position Australian aluminium as a leader in green metals

  • support aluminium smelters to switch to renewable electricity and decarbonise production, enhancing global competitiveness

  • help strengthen the Australian economy and support regional communities

  • enable producers to benefit from a growing global demand for low-emissions materials

  • be available from the 2028–29 financial year.

Smelters will need to show reduced carbon emissions before the end of 2035 to qualify for an emissions-linked credit contract. Credits will be payable per tonne of green aluminium produced for up to 10 years, or to 2044, whichever is sooner. Individual facility production costs will determine final credit rates.

Your feedback will ensure the GAPC supports industry competitiveness, energy transition and Australia’s pathway to net zero.
